The truth about the future of Arsenal academy goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman

Arsenal’s lead academy goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman is set to leave the club at the end of the season, football.london understands.

Woodman, 49, took over the reigns of the Gunners’ goalkeeping department after Gerry Peyton left the club in 2018.

However, the arrival of Inaki Cana in 2019 has seen Woodman’s role focus on the development of keepers at all levels from Under-9s through to the Under-23s, with Cana working closely alongside the first team.

football.london has learned that Woodman’s contract – which expires at the end of the season – won’t be renewed and the former Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, West Ham and Charlton Athletic coach will be leaving after almost five years at the club.

Manager Mikel Arteta revealed at the start of the season that he has full faith in Cana, who was pivotal in bringing 26-year-old goalkeeper Alex Runarsson to north London from French side Dijon last summer.

“When it comes down to the goalkeeper, he [Cana] has a big say on how we are going to implement our methodology,” Arteta said in September.

“How we are going to train them and how we are going to treat the goalkeeping position in the short, medium and long term.

“Obviously at the end it will be me who makes the decision [who to buy]. But is very important that the people around me, who have on many occasions a much clearer criteria and specificity than me, that I really listen to them and try to follow what their feelings are.

“I have big faith in Inaki as I do with the rest of the staff that are here. I will take that into the medical department, with the physios, the kit man, every department that is here.”

Woodman’s son Freddie currently plays for Swansea City on loan from Newcastle where he has been tracked by Arsenal this season.

The Gunners have been watching him closely since the end of last season when he finished his initial spell with the Swans.

However, with Mat Ryan’s contract expected to turn permanent in the summer it appears that Arsenal’s attentions will turn elsewhere as they look to strengthen at left-back.
