Thomas Partey key in Mesut Ozil return, Emi Buendia transfer stanceAll the headlines around Arsenal this evening, including why Mesut Ozil could return with Thomas Partey in tow, the future of Emi Buendia and a missed opportunity with Ismael Bennacer.

Here are your Arsenal evening headlines for Tuesday, December 1.

Mesut Ozil can play with Thomas Partey

Paul Merson believes that Mesut Ozil can play in Arsenal’s midfield because of the protection that Thomas Partey provides.

Ozil has been entirely excluded from the Arsenal squad this season and has not featured since Project Restart. Mikel Arteta says that the decision is a tactical one, but Merson believes that Partey’s arrival now provides the defensive balance to utilise the German’s creative juices.

“For me, Mesut Ozil comes back in the team if Thomas Partey is fit,” he wrote in his column for Sky Sports . “Partey gets around the pitch, dominates the midfield and dictates the game. Him playing opens up a chance for Ozil.”

Merson added that Ozil would struggle without Partey, but that the Ghanian is crucial to Arteta’s midfield set-up.

“If Partey doesn’t play, Ozil can’t play,” he continued. “Without Partey, Arsenal are not going to dictate the midfield, and then can’t afford to play with 10 men.

But if Arsenal have the midfield, and Ozil is playing behind Aubameyang, with two flying wingers.”

Arsenal have not made contact with Norwich City regarding a January move for midfielder Emi Buendia, football.london understands .

Buendia had been linked with a move to north London following Norwich’s relegation from the Premier League last season. However, the Gunners have made no formal approach for the Argentinian, who provided seven assists last season and is well-liked by Arteta.

A source close to the player said: “[Buendia is] focused on Norwich and getting promoted.” The source also refused to rule out an exit, but conceded that a January transfer would depend on Norwich.

Meanwhile, in an attempt to solve their creative void, Arsenal are assessing moves for Dominik Szoboszlai, Houssem Aouar or Christian Eriksen, though it remains to be seen whether any approach is made for any.

The Ismael Bennacer mistake

Former Arsenal midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who is now playing for AC Milan, has opened up on his time in north London, discussing why he left the club in 2017.

Bennacer arrived at the Emirates in 2015. He made his only appearance for the club against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup, before leaving on loan in 2017, eventually moving to Empoli and then Milan.

Bennacer is now a regular at the San Siro, and many fans believe Arsenal made a mistake in letting him go. The midfielder discussed his departure this week.

Why didn’t it work there? I arrived in England in July. The first two months I stayed in a hotel because I didn’t want to go and live with a family I didn’t know,” he told Goal .

“I was 17, I was not of age and I couldn’t live alone, so my sister came to stay with me. Then Chaines joins me, with whom I had been engaged since school and who would

“In September, finally, I see the pitch. In the League Cup, against Sheffield: Chamberlain gets hurt, Walcott gets in his place and after two minutes he gets hurt too, so Wenger throws me in. The problem is that he puts a lot of space on the left of the front three: it’s a role I’ve never played.

“I felt crazy pressure on me. I lost a few balls, but I also recovered fewer. After that, I didn’t play anymore, but I have no regrets: I trained with important players like Ozil and Cazorla.

“I still had a four-year contract with the English club, but I went where they really wanted me. I didn’t know Empoli, but I accepted to go down from the Premier League to the Italian Serie B because that was the club that wanted me most of all.

“The way I did with Milan: I chose them for their history, but even more because his project was the best for me.”
